Breastfeeding - cheap, safe food during a crisis

In difficult situations, breastfeeding is the easiest, cheapest and safest way to feed babies.

  • Breastfeeding takes less time and effort than preparing baby food.
  • Sometimes milk flow is temporarily impeded when the mother or the child is experiencing stress. Nevertheless, mothers can produce enough milk even in difficult situations. The mother needs to drink enough and a quiet place so that she can breastfeed often.
  • Babies younger than 6 months do not need water or other foods apart from breastfeeding.
  • Older babies and toddlers should also continue to be breastfed in addition to complementary food.
  • Even if the mother is not fully nourished, she can breastfeed.
  • Bottle feeding can interfere with breastfeeding.
